Elections Results 2024
NAfME-Texas held elections for the following positions on the Executive Board: President-Elect and Member-at-Large. See below for information about our newest members!
President-Elect
Tanya Allen
Bio: Tanya Allen is the acting department chair and Associate Professor of Music Education at Texas Southern University (TSU) in Houston, Texas. She completed her graduate degrees in music education at Florida State University and her bachelor’s degree and teaching certification at the University of New Orleans. Tanya has over twenty years of experience teaching music to elementary through post-secondary students and enjoys teaching non-music majors as well as mentoring pre-service teachers in her current position at TSU. When not working, Tanya enjoys exercising and trying new brunch spots with her five-year old daughter.
Statement of Interest: After moving to Texas in 2016 to work at TSU, I continued my membership with NAfME but did not become active in the state affiliation until 2019. At that time, I volunteered to serve as the Preservice teacher education chair, which I did until the end of 2021, and that experience is the main reason why I would like to be considered for this position. It connected me with several of the current leaders and provided me with a first-hand look at the strengths and accomplishments of the organization, as well as the opportunities of growth. That tenure also provided me with a clear look at every aspect of leadership and the responsibilities. Adding new individuals to any leadership position creates space for new ideas and exchanges and I hope to continue the great work of NAfME-Texas by offering unique ideas and having substantive exchanges with the board and all members of the organization.
Member-at-Large
Corey Sullivan
Bio: Dr. Corey Sullivan joined the faculty at Texas Tech University as the Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education and Associate Director of Choral Studies in the Fall of 2023. He teaches undergraduate course work in choral methods and music technology and conducts the treble ensemble Scarlet Voce. A South Georgia native, he taught middle and high school chorus in Tallahassee, Florida prior to his appointment at TTU. He received his Bachelor of Music Education, Master of Music Education, and Ph.D. in Music Education from Florida State University. Dr. Sullivan's research is centered on music cognition and perception in digital settings, the intersections of technology and equity in the music classroom, and singer identity development in choirs.
His research has been presented at state, regional, and national venues. He has published reviews and research in the field of music education, including a recent scoping review in Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. Dr. Sullivan is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, International Society for Music Education, College Music Society, Texas Music Educators Association, and National Collegiate Choral Organization.
Statement of Interest: I read your posting regarding elections to the NAfME-Texas Executive Board with great interest and would be delighted to be considered for the open Member-at-Large position. NAfME’s commitment to research and student advocacy are immensely appealing to me as an applicant, as are the exceptional reputations of the NAfME-Texas board members. I’m hoping that my varied positions of service to the profession might be of interest to you as you consider candidates for this position.
I have had the opportunity to serve on several boards and committees over the course of my teaching career that have shaped me and my relationship with our shared profession. Two separate instances serving as the chair of the Florida State University Singers’ Reunion Committee Boards lead me to seek service through the Florida Vocal Association, a component of the Florida Music Education Association. During an eight-year period, I served in several positions with FVA. These included service as the District 3 Chairperson, Coordinator, and Technology Coordinator. As district chair, I was given the unique opportunity to serve on the all-state and sight-reading committees for the state of Florida. I also served in an ex-officio position on the board of the Tallahassee Community Chorus during my doctoral studies at Florida State. TCC is a non-auditioned 200+ member choir whose mission includes fostering partnerships with local community-benefit organizations such as the Big Bend Homeless Coalition. I would be delighted to be considered for the position of Member-at-Large for the NAfME-Texas Board. Thank you for your consideration, and best wishes in your search.
