All students deserve access to and equity in the delivery of music education, one of the subjects deemed necessary in federal law for a well-rounded education, which is at the heart of NAfME’s stated mission: to advance music education by promoting the understanding and making of music by all.

Statement of Solidarity

The National Association for Music Education–Texas (NAfME–Texas) mourns the senseless death of George Floyd, a native Texan and a musician who rapped in the Houston area under the name Big Floyd, and we grieve for each African American and Black life that has been violently taken too soon. We acknowledge the grief, sorrow, anger, and fear felt by our members of color, and we share their pain. We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter to denounce power structures that enable systemic oppression and advocate for greater justice and equity in our country. We pledge to support all of our members and are committed to promoting and supporting anti-racist and culturally sustaining policies and practices within our organization and our profession.
